Adult Program - The Trials of Galileo: When Worlds and Egos Collide

Tuesday, October 87:00—8:30 PMMain FloorBillerica Public Library15 Concord Road, Billerica, MA, 01821

Two worlds clash in cosmic conflict. Galileo Galilei’s world of science and humanism collides with the absolutist power and authority of the Catholic Church. Galileo’s trial for heresy marks both the end of his liberty and that of the Italian Renaissance.

Enduring Themes of this Trial: Science versus religion; two men’s pride; the betrayal by Galileo of his friend, his Cardinal (later known as Pope Urban VIII); and the failure of due process during the Roman Inquisition. Presented  by the  Honorable Dennis J. Curran Justice, Massachusetts Superior Court (ret.).
