In 1846, the residents of Balinmore, Ireland have their backs against the wall. The beginnings of the potato blight, combined with the oppressive policies of English landlords, have left them with no choice but to fight for their homes. The Black Thorn follows the McDonagh family as their struggle against tyranny, poverty, and violence leads them from class warfare in Balinmore across the Atlantic Ocean to America, where the country soon descends into the chaos and brutality of the Civil War.

John Desmond taught history at Billerica Memorial High School for 34 years and has recently begun his writing career. His first book has received stellar reviews and has been praised for its page-turner plot and compelling characters, as much as for its historical accuracy and relevant message.
